Tezzbuzz Desk- World Osteoporosis Day is celebrated on 20 October. The purpose of this day is to make people aware about bone health and diseases like osteoporosis. Nowadays, the habit of watching reels on mobile from waking up in the morning till sleeping at night has become common. People spend hours scrolling through Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and other short videos. This can affect not only the eyes and mental health, but also the health of the neck, back and muscles. Sitting in a wrong posture for a long time and looking at the mobile can increase the pressure on the spinal cord. Osteoporosis is a disease related to bones, in which the bones become weaker and more fragile. In such a situation, the risk of fracture increases even after a minor fall or minor injury. To keep bones healthy, a balanced diet, adequate physical activity and right lifestyle are necessary. Although watching reels on mobile for hours is not a direct cause of osteoporosis, reducing physical activity due to it can have a negative impact on health.
According to Dr Gaurav Batra, Principal Consultant, Department of Neurosurgery, Yashoda Medicity, Indirapuram, people often keep scrolling on mobile for a long time while watching reels, YouTube shorts and other short videos. During this, their neck remains bent and their back is also bent forward. Constantly remaining in this posture can increase pressure on the neck muscles and spine. This can cause problems like neck pain, stiffness, shoulder discomfort and upper back pain. This type of problem caused by bending the neck and looking at the mobile for a long time is usually called text neck.
Another disadvantage of the habit of watching reels is that people sit in one place for a long time and their physical activities reduce. Not moving and exercising regularly can cause fatigue and weakness in the muscles. Apart from this, sitting continuously can also increase the problem of back pain and stiffness in the body. Excessive use of mobile can affect the sleep routine. Not getting enough sleep and lack of physical activity can also affect overall health.
According to Dr. Gaurav Batra, the pressure on the neck and back can be reduced by taking some precautions while using the mobile. Try to keep the mobile at eye level, so that the neck does not have to be bent down continuously. Instead of sitting in the same posture for a long time, take breaks in between and do light exercises for the neck and shoulders. Apart from this, it is also important to take regular walks, do physical activities and maintain correct sitting posture. Schedule time for watching reels, so that mobile use does not interfere with your sleep and daily activities. If persistent pain, tingling, numbness or weakness is felt in the neck or back, a doctor should be consulted. World Osteoporosis Day reminds us that bone health should not be ignored. Limited use of mobile, correct posture, balanced diet and active lifestyle can help in keeping the spine and muscles healthy.
