World’s second most visited city eyes 1.85 million visitors to mega events in second half

More than 100 mega events planned for the second half of this year are expected to draw over 1.85 million visitors to Hong Kong, the world’s second-most visited city for international arrivals after Bangkok.

Hong Kong Cyclothon, Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival and others could create a total sales value of 5.9 billion Hong Kong dollars (US$752 million) in the second half, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The city will host the 2026 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Finance Ministers’ Meeting in October.

About 1.75 million visitors were drawn to more than 130 events in Hong Kong between January and June, generating around HK$5.8 billion in spending and contributing HK$3.3 billion to the economy, the South China Morning Post reported.

With revitalized neighborhoods, a thriving dining and nightlife scene, world-class cultural institutions and some of Asia’s most ambitious tourism campaigns, Hong Kong is emerging as a favorite destination of tourists, British magazine Time Out wrote.

The city received 31.22 million visitors in the first seven months of the year, up 12% from the same period last year.
