Wrestling U23 World C’ships: Vishvajit More wins India’s first-ever silver in Greco-Roman

A day after becoming the country’s first Greco-Roman wrestler to advance to the final of the men’s 55kg category, Vishvajit More settled for a silver at the U23 World Championships in Las Vegas, USA, on Thursday.

More lost to Georgia’s Koba Karumidze in a tightly fought contest, 12-13. He made a good comeback from 5-9 down to lead 12-9 but conceded the match in the final seconds.

This is More’s third consecutive U23 World Championship medal, having won bronze in the 2025 and 2024 editions.

He defeated Russia’s Malik Gigiev 7-4 in the semifinals and overcame U20 world champion Armin Shamsipour of Iran in a one-sided quarterfinal 8-1.

More’s silver is India’s first medal of the tournament.

India has fielded a total of 21 wrestlers, including 10 men’s freestyle, 6 women’s freestyle, and 5 Greco-Roman for the tournament.

Komal (59kg) was also in action on the day and had a good run till the semi-finals but will now compete for the bronze medal after losing her semi-final bout.

Meanwhile, India will go unrepresented in four women’s weight categories after Parveen (50kg), Ahilya Shinde (55kg), Neha Sharma (57kg) and Neha Sangwan (65kg) struggled to get their visas, eventually missing out on the tournament.
