Read Desk. Yamaha Motor India Chairman Hajime Ota recently said in an interview that the company is re-considering entering the 250cc to 1000cc segment in India. This could mean that the company brings some of its models to India that are sold internationally.
Hajime Ota hasn't revealed which models are being considered, but we expect the company to bring the Yamaha R3 and MT-03 back to India. After the discontinuation of both these models and the recent launch of Yamaha R2, the company does not have any models in the 300-400cc segment.
Filling this portfolio gap would be the right move to better compete with rivals like KTM and TVS. Another interesting model that could help Yamaha gain larger market share is the Lander 250, which was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025. This motorcycle can help the company enter the growing dual-sport segment.
Currently, this segment is dominated by Hero, which has models like Xpulse 200 4v and Xpulse 210. Kawasaki recently entered this segment with the KLX230, and Honda also plans to do the same with the upcoming XR300L and XR300 Rally.
If Yamaha is serious about expanding its lineup, it could also introduce the Tenere 700 and R7 in the higher capacity segment. Both these models were shown at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025 along with the Lander 250.
Finally, there was also mention of increasing R&D capacity in India and increasing export potential compared to Indonesia. If the company plans to manufacture its upcoming higher-end models in India, this could help keep their prices reasonable compared to competitors.
