Yogi government changed the face of UP jails with Rs 17 thousand crores, budget increased by 215%

UP Jail Modernization: Yogi government has done many important works in the last nine and a half years towards equipping the jail system of the state with modern, safe and better facilities. During this period, special emphasis was laid on the infrastructure, modernization and new technology of jails. For this, Yogi government spent more than Rs 17 thousand crore in the last nine and a half years. In this, maximum amount was spent on the infrastructure of jails.

Jail department budget increased by 215 percent

DG, Prison and Correctional Services PC Meena said that along with strengthening the law and order in the state, the Yogi government has also laid emphasis on making the prison arrangements as per the times. Due to the efforts of the Yogi government, on one hand the capacity of the jail system of the state is being expanded, while on the other hand the security and administrative systems are being strengthened through modern infrastructure and technology. He said that there has been a significant increase in the budget for the jail department in the last nine and a half years.

A total budget of Rs 913.07 crore was allocated for the prison department in the financial year 2017-18. In comparison, it increased to Rs 2,877.58 crore in the financial year 2026-27. During this period, the budget of the jail department increased by about 215 percent. A total budget of Rs 5,494.41 crore was allocated for the prison department between the financial year 2017-18 to 2021-22, while this amount increased to Rs 11,913.53 crore from the year 2022-23 to 2026-27. This increase reflects the priority being given by the Yogi government to the development and modernization of jails.

Emphasis on modern infrastructure in jails

DG said that along with construction of new jails in the state, work is also being done by the Yogi government towards increasing the prisoner capacity. District prisons are being constructed at a cost of Rs 176.12 crore in Amethi, Rs 203.42 crore in Mahoba, Rs 184.94 crore in Hathras, Rs 228.31 crore in Kushinagar, Rs 179.79 crore in Jaunpur, and Rs 190.08 crore in Hapur.

Along with the construction of new jails, the process of purchasing land for the proposed jails is also being taken forward. The government has sanctioned Rs 24.56 crore for the proposed jail in Sambhal, Rs 96.20 crore in Shamli, Rs 24.12 crore in Ballia, Rs 50.87 crore in Saharanpur, Rs 32.28 crore in Amroha and Rs 34.27 crore in Chandauli.
