Yogi government’s decision: District Panchayat presidents were made administrators, the tenure of the presidents is ending today

Lucknow10 July. The Uttar Pradesh government has taken an important decision to appoint District Panchayat Presidents across the state as administrators. The five-year tenure of all the District Panchayats of Uttar Pradesh formed after the General Panchayat Election-2021 is ending on Saturday, July 11. In this regard, the state government issued an important order on Friday and decided that till the formation of new district panchayats, the outgoing district panchayat presidents will be appointed as administrators.

According to the government order, under Section 20(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Area Panchayat and District Panchayat Act, 1961, the tenure of each District Panchayat is fixed for five years from the date of its first meeting, whereas according to Section 21, the tenure of the President and Vice President also ends with the tenure of the District Panchayat.

Citing Section 20(3-A) of the Act, the government has said that if due to unavoidable circumstances or in public interest it is not possible to conduct elections for a new District Panchayat before the end of the term, then the state government can appoint an administrative committee or an administrator. Such administrators can work for a maximum of six months or till the formation of the new District Panchayat, whichever is earlier.

Under this provision, the state government has decided that from July 12, 2026, till the first meeting of the new District Panchayats or the completion of a maximum period of six months, the outgoing District Panchayat Presidents will be appointed administrators of the respective District Panchayats. For this, the concerned District Magistrate/District Magistrate has been authorized to nominate the outgoing District Panchayat President as the Administrator in his district.
