Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina will return home in December, said- ‘I don’t care about my life, I will surrender myself’
New Delhi, July 10. Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina announced on Friday that she will return home in December. She also said that there is a threat to her life if she returns home, but she is not worried about it and she will voluntarily return to Bangladesh and surrender in the court there.
Sheikh Hasina has taken refuge in India from August 5, 2024 after the coup amid the fierce student movement.
It is noteworthy that 76-year-old Sheikh Hasina, who was the Prime Minister four times in a decade and a half, had to face a coup in the year 2024 amid the fierce student movement that emerged in Bangladesh and had to flee the country after resigning from the post on August 5, 2024. Since then he has taken refuge in India. He made public the sensational information about his return home in a special interview given to news agency Reuters. She clearly admitted in the interview that she could be arrested or even killed if she returned to Bangladesh, yet she would have to return home and surrender herself.
The Dhaka administration is continuously demanding his extradition from India. On this, India has said that it is investigating this request under the existing judicial and legal processes. However, now Hasina has said that instead of waiting for extradition, she will voluntarily go back and surrender.
Sheikh Hasina will have to go through strict legal process
There is no doubt that Sheikh Hasina will have to go through a strict legal process as soon as she returns to Bangladesh. Whichever route they enter Bangladesh, they will be immediately detained by immigration or border officials. They will be produced before the relevant courts immediately after their detention. Once arrested, Sheikh Hasina will remain in jail facing the many criminal cases and appeals pending against her.
The court has given death sentence, The appeal deadline has also ended
Noteworthy is the fact that the war crimes court of Bangladesh had sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death in November last year in her absence. While serving as the Prime Minister, he is accused of ordering deadly action during the student movement. According to Bangladeshi law, if a person is convicted in absentia, he has to surrender and file an appeal within 30 days of the verdict. In Sheikh Hasina’s case this 30-day deadline has already expired. Challenging this sentence in court has now become more legally complex.
Accused of ordering lethal action during student movement
If Sheikh Hasina’s sentence is upheld and her conviction is upheld by the court, then under the legal process she will have to either serve a long prison term or be hanged unless the sentence is overturned or commuted through the judicial process. Apart from this decision, many different criminal cases are registered against Sheikh Hasina in the country including land related crimes and other charges. Arrest warrants are also active against him. However Sheikh Hasina has denied all these allegations.
Threat to life and political instability
Apart from legal complications, Sheikh Hasina’s life could be in serious danger if she returns to Bangladesh. There are grave concerns about his personal safety amid the highly polarized political environment of Bangladesh. There is also a danger of attack on them. At present Sheikh Hasina said in the interview, ‘My party leaders and workers are being subjected to tremendous atrocities. If death comes, I want it to come to my own motherland, where my parents are buried and where their blood was shed.
‘I want to prove the court a farce‘
Despite all the life-threatening risks, Sheikh Hasina said she would rather face cases in Bangladesh than live in exile. “I believe in justice and I think once the proceedings begin it will become clear to people what a load of crap this court is,” she said. This is what I want to prove. They may have convicted me and I may not be able to contest the elections. But why are they suspending Awami League? If we have done bad then let the public decide.
