‘You are also the son of a mother…’, what did Balwinder Kaur say when she stopped CM Bhagwant Mann in the middle of the road?
These days, the issue of Amritpal Singh, head of ‘Waris Punjab De’ and MP from Khadur Sahib, is once again at the center of discussion in Punjab politics. This time the headlines are not related to any political rhetoric, but to the helplessness of a mother and her questions. In fact, Amritpal Singh’s mother Balwinder Kaur blocked the way of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and asked him directly that when the NSA period has ended, why is her son not being brought back to Punjab from the jail in Assam?
This incident happened when Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was carrying out ‘Shukrana Yatra’ in the state. This yatra was organized to express gratitude to the public after the implementation of strict anti-sacrilege laws. Meanwhile, Balwinder Kaur came very close to the Chief Minister’s vehicle near Amritsar. With a choked voice he forced the Chief Minister to listen to him. In the video going viral on social media, she is seen saying, “You are also the son of a mother, listen to me. I am Amritpal’s mother. Why are you not bringing him back even after the end of NSA?”
MP Amritpal Singh is lodged in Dibrugarh jail.
Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail, Assam. He was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) in April 2023. Since then he is in the jail of Assam, thousands of kilometers away from Punjab. It is being told that his period of detention under NSA had technically ended on 22 April 2026. However, despite this the path for his release or return to Punjab could not be cleared.
In fact, the very next day after the end of the NSA, the police formally arrested him in the famous Ajnala police station attack case of 2023. Due to this new legal entanglement, Amritpal’s jail term continued. His mother alleges that the government is deliberately keeping him away from Punjab soil, whereas now strict restrictions like NSA are not applicable on him.
Ajnala scandal and legal complications
The story behind the arrest of Amritpal Singh is related to 23 February 2023, when Ajnala police station was attacked by his supporters. After this incident, Punjab Police had conducted a statewide search operation against Amritpal. After evading the police for about a month, he was finally arrested on 23 April 2023 from Rode village in Moga district.
There is discussion in political circles that Amritpal’s return to Punjab could be a big challenge in terms of security. Last month, Punjab-Haryana High Court had also intervened in this matter. While hearing the petition of the Punjab government, the court had given clear instructions that there is no need to physically bring Amritpal Singh to the lower court in Amritsar for the hearing of the Ajnala case, rather his appearance will be done through ‘virtual’ medium only.
Debate broke out on politics and social media
The video of this brief but sharp conversation between Balwinder Kaur and the Chief Minister is now spreading rapidly on the internet. Opposition parties are using this to corner the government, while the government argues that the law is doing its job. The investigation and court proceedings in the case of attack on Ajnala police station are still going on, due to which Amritpal has to remain in jail.
This emotional face of Amritpal’s mother is creating different reactions among the people of Punjab. One section is justifying it on humanitarian grounds, while the other section is reminding us of the seriousness of incidents like Ajnala. For now, the ball is in the government’s court as to how it balances the return of an MP to Punjab and the legal process.
