NEW DELHI, June 24: In a shocking incident, a 21-year-old youth was stabbed to death in a running local train by a fellow passenger in Mumbai just for a petty quarrel over closing the coach doors during the heavy rains on Tuesday night, the police said on Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Mayank Lohar, was traveling in the first-class compartment of a Churchgate-Nallasopara fast local when he got into a heated argument with another passenger between Goregaon and Kandivali. The accused, Roshan Suvarna, was arrested from Kurla area of Mumbai.
The shocking video from inside the coach, apparently taken by some fellow passengers, showed the accused, dressed in all black and holding a knife, walking away after attacking the victim. Bloodstains could be seen streaking down the metal seats. “He killed us, he killed us (He killed him-he actually killed him),” people could be heard saying in the video.
Passengers were seen dispersing as the accused, with his shirt unbuttoned up to his navel, turned around to look at the man lying on the train floor in a pool of blood. Nobody tried to stop or approach the accused, the video showed.
The Western Railway police said the dispute escalated to the point where some passengers began assaulting the accused. Enraged by the assault, the accused pulled a knife from his bag and launched a fatal attack on Lohar, police said.
“Between Goregaon and Kandivali, two passengers fought over closing the train’s door amid rainfall. During this time, the accused stabbed the victim with a knife. He then fled the scene,” Datta Khuprekar, Senior Police Inspector, Borivali Railway Police, said.
The victim died on the spot. The Railway Police arrived at the scene, took possession of the body, and sent it for a post-mortem examination. The victim’s mother, overcome with grief and fighting tears, sought justice for her son.
“Just believe it, tell the story of my son, he did not give birth to anyone else. What happened yesterday has not come till now, my son. Kidhar Jaun, you are ruined. (Punish him. Get justice for my son. He never used to fight or quarrel with anyone. My son left yesterday and still hasn’t returned. Where should I go? I am ruined),” the victim’s mother, who wouldn’t stop crying, said.
The victim’s sister demanded death penalty for the accused and questioned where people were when his brother was being attacked.
“It was 10:30 at night – where were the people? The knife was huge. I want justice. He (accused) should be sentenced to death. If he isn’t punished today, someone else will die tomorrow,” the victim’s sister said. “My brother never caused any trouble, never got into fights with anyone. He kept to himself and lived quietly. He had his whole life ahead of him. What is the police doing?” she questioned.
