Business News: The scope of digital content and creator economy is growing rapidly in India. Video platform YouTube is no longer just a medium of entertainment and information, but its role is also increasing in the digital economy of the country. According to YouTube's 2025 Impact Report, the creator ecosystem associated with the platform in India was able to contribute more than Rs 18,000 crore to the country's GDP in 2025. This same ecosystem supported employment equivalent to more than 9.6 lakh full-time jobs.
This report is based on research by Oxford Economics. Its figures show that the economic benefits from YouTube are not limited only to video creators. People working in technical and creative fields related to content production are also getting employment and income opportunities from it.
The growing economic impact of the creator economy
Apart from video creators, YouTube's ecosystem includes camera operators, cinematographers, sound engineers, editors, script writers, graphic designers and many other production professionals. Apart from this, businesses related to digital marketing, advertising, brand partnership and other services are also part of this economy.
According to the report, the economic contribution of YouTube's creator ecosystem has increased compared to last year. In the previous year, this ecosystem had contributed more than Rs 16,000 crore to India's GDP and supported employment equivalent to about 9.3 lakh full-time jobs. Thus, the increase in economic contribution and employment figures in a year points towards the expansion of the digital creator sector.
Creator culture is increasing even in small towns
YouTube's influence in India is not limited to just Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru or other big metros. According to the platform, new creative clusters are also developing in non-metro cities like Jaipur, Lucknow and Kochi. The youth of these cities are reaching out to the audience by creating content in local language and on local topics. This is also giving them an opportunity to learn new skills related to video production, editing, marketing and digital business.
Developing a local creator ecosystem can also give small businesses, local brands and service providers the opportunity to reach new customers through digital platforms.
More than 3 lakh apprentices got support
The report also mentions apprenticeship and training opportunities associated with YouTube's monetization ecosystem. According to data, the ecosystem of creators monetizing on the platform supported more than 3 lakh apprentices in the last one year. This data shows that opportunities to learn and work in the digital content industry are growing not only for experienced creators but also for entry-level youth.
India is YouTube's biggest market
India is one of YouTube's biggest markets and according to the company, the platform has more than 500 million users in the country. Due to the large user base, Indian creators have the opportunity to reach not only the domestic audience but also the international audience. According to YouTube, as of June 2026, there were more than 20,000 channels in India with more than 10 lakh subscribers. This number shows that the base of channels building large digital audiences in India is continuously increasing.
The content of Indian YouTube creators is now being watched even beyond the country's borders. According to the company, more than 15 percent of the total watch time of content produced on Indian channels comes from viewers living outside India. Due to linguistic diversity, entertainment, music, education, technology and content related to Indian culture, the country's creators are also getting international audiences.
