Why MS Dhoni Backed the Zaheer Khan CSK Coach Move
Once Dhoni returned and formally joined the selection process alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the ownership group, the dynamic shifted instantly. Dhoni came in with absolute clarity about what the dressing room required and placed Zaheer Khan’s name firmly on the table.

Bringing in a pure tactical bowling mind offers CSK the ideal counterbalance. In modern T20 cricket, especially with Chennai struggling in death overs and bowling execution, having an elite bowling brain at the helm addresses their most glaring weakness.

World-class fast-bowling tacticians are rare in Indian cricket, and Zaheer remains one of the finest minds the country has produced. Beyond taking 311 Test and 282 ODI wickets, Zaheer was the architect of India’s bowling strategies throughout the 2011 World Cup triumph, finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 21 scalps.
He also brings valuable franchise leadership pedigree, having served as Mumbai Indians’ Director of Cricket Operations and later working with Lucknow Super Giants. For a developing CSK pace unit, Zaheer’s understanding of reverse swing, slower variations, and field placements provides an invaluable asset that overseas coaches often struggle to communicate to young domestic pacers.
