New Delhi. The Supreme Court has asked the Delhi High Court to continue monitoring the case related to the building collapse incident in Satya Niketan area. The Supreme Court has also directed the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to file their respective reports in connection with the ongoing proceedings. The top court said that since the proceedings in the case have now started, it does not want to change the existing situation. The Court also took note of the steps being taken following its earlier orders in respect of previous incidents of building collapse in Delhi and building fire in Lucknow.
In this case, amicus curiae (court friend) advocate Ajit Kumar said that action has been initiated against unauthorized construction and illegal PG hostels. The process is moving in the right direction. He said that inspection was conducted in four areas of Delhi and Lucknow. The instructions issued earlier included Lajpat Nagar, Saket, Malviya Nagar, Sarojini Nagar and Aliganj of Lucknow. However, the Supreme Court clarified that the present proceedings are not limited to specific areas of Delhi or Lucknow. The amicus suggested that the High Court proceedings may continue and a report may be directed to be filed before the Supreme Court in accordance with the order dated March 25, 2026 (particularly paragraphs 6 and 7) and the order dated August 5, 2026.
On this, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R. Mahadevan's bench accepted the suggestion of the amicus and said that it did not want to make any change in the position. We request the High Court to monitor the matter and bring it to a conclusion. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared on behalf of Delhi Government and MCD. On Sunday, August 6, 7 people including 5 students were killed when the building of a PG hostel operated in Satya Niketan area collapsed.
