New Delhi. The court has sentenced 10 culprits to death in the Naxalite attack that took place on May 25, 2013 in Jheeram Valley of Chhattisgarh. The special NIA court of Jagdalpur gave this decision. Two women Naxalites are also among those punished. The court has given 30 days time to the culprits to appeal against the decision in the High Court. Earlier on September 5, the court had convicted these accused and reserved the decision to decide the punishment under various sections of the UAPA Act, IPC, Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act. Armed cadres of the banned organization CPI (Maoist) had ambushed the Parivartan Yatra of Congress in Jheeram Valley of Darbha police station area and 32 people were killed.

Naxalites first blew up a car through a landmine blast. Because of that, there was a pothole about 5 feet deep on the road. After that a broken truck got stuck on the way. Then for about two hours the Naxalites fired indiscriminately at Congress leaders and also threw grenades. A total of 32 people, including veteran Congress leader Vidyacharan Shukla, then state Congress president Nand Kumar Patel, his son Dinesh, former Chhattisgarh opposition leader Mahendra Karma, senior Congress leader and former MLA Uday Mudaliar, were killed in that attack. More than 30 people were also injured. NIA had filed the chargesheet in the special court located in Jagdalpur on 25 September 2014. A total of 11 people were arrested in this case, out of which one accused died during the hearing of the case. The prosecution had recorded the statements of 101 witnesses in the NIA court.
