Supreme Court Blow To Mamata Banerjee: Supreme Court blow to Mamata Banerjee faction, rejects petition regarding freezing bank accounts of TMC

New Delhi. The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction had filed a petition in the Supreme Court requesting removal of the freeze on TMC's bank accounts. In the Supreme Court on Thursday, the bench of Justice MM Sundaresh and Justice PB Varale rejected this petition of the Mamata faction. The Supreme Court refused to interfere in the order of the Calcutta High Court, which had refused to lift the freeze on debits in four bank accounts of TMC.

In the Supreme Court, the bench of Justice Sundaresh and Justice Varale said that the Election Commission has frozen the election symbol of TMC. Besides, there is also a big question as to who is the real owner of the funds in the bank accounts. Therefore the court will not go into the depth of this matter. The Supreme Court said that it does not want to go into the merits and demerits of this case. Also, they are not in favor of taking steps under Article 136 of the Constitution. The Supreme Court bench said that it requests the Calcutta High Court to hear this case expeditiously.

Four bank accounts of TMC have been frozen by West Bengal Police. The Mamata Banerjee faction argued that there were procedural deficiencies in the FIR related to freezing these bank accounts. The Calcutta High Court, in its order dated August 27, 2026, had refused to approve the transaction of money from these four bank accounts. The Calcutta High Court had said that allowing transactions from the bank account would weaken its previous order, in which the party was given the freedom to withdraw money to meet daily expenses. At the time of freezing, there are about Rs 804 crores in these bank accounts of TMC. At the same time, ED has also frozen Rs 440 crore deposited in three bank accounts of TMC. ED alleges that TMC has embezzled Rs 160 crore of party funds through Carewell Aviation of Kolkata.
