With change in weather, the risk of viral infection and fever increases rapidly. Usually people ignore every fever considering it as “normal viral”, but these days swine flu (H1N1) is spreading very fast in Delhi. In such a situation, it is very important to recognize the difference between swine flu (H1N1) and normal viral fever in time. What is the difference between the two and what measures should be taken to prevent swine flu.
Main differences between viral fever and swine flu
Normal viral fever progresses slowly. In contrast, in swine flu the virus attack is sudden and very fast. In this, the patient starts feeling very ill within a few hours.
Fever level: In normal viral fever, there is mild to moderate fever (99°-101°F). Swine flu causes sudden high fever ranging from 102°F to 104°F, which is not easily reduced with simple medicines.
Body and muscle pain: Swine flu causes severe pain and fatigue in muscles and joints, whereas in normal viral it is mild.
Respiratory problems: Normal viral causes only problems like runny nose or mild sore throat. Swine flu causes a dry, harsh cough, sore throat, and in some cases, shortness of breath or chest tightness.
Measures to prevent swine flu (H1N1)
Swine flu is a droplet infection. To prevent this, definitely adopt these measures.
Flu Vaccination: The most effective way to prevent swine flu is the annual quadrivalent influenza vaccine. It creates antibodies against H1N1 virus in the body.
Mask and distance: Wear an N95 or surgical mask in crowded places and cover your mouth with your elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Hand Hygiene: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds several times a day or use an alcohol-based sanitizer. Do not touch eyes, nose and mouth with dirty hands.
Isolate yourself: If you have a fever or cough, stay home to avoid spreading the infection to family and coworkers.
When to consult a doctor?
If you or anyone in your family has trouble breathing, chest pain, bluish lips, or persistent high fever for more than 3 days, contact a doctor at the nearest hospital immediately. Do not take antibiotics on your own without doctor’s advice. Swine flu is a viral disease, on which antibiotics do not affect.
