Indian Army demands increasing role of private sector for military satellites

India’s top military leadership has stressed the need to increase private sector participation in manufacturing military satellites, underscoring the growing importance of surveillance and defense from space in future war scenarios. ‘India Deafspace Symposium 2026’ (DefSpace Symposium 2026During the ), senior officials said that relying only on ISRO is not enough to meet the needs of modern conflicts.

Indian Army General Anil Chauhan said that future space capabilities cannot be developed through government agencies alone. He considered space a sustainable operational resource. (operational assets) Pointed out the need to be seen as a strategic alliance and emphasized on enhancing partnerships while maintaining strategic autonomy.

He also said that India must develop a robust and resilient space architecture that is artificial intelligence based, self-reliant in quantum-security, cyber-secure and rapidly reset. According to him, less preparation than this could put India in a strategically weak position.

Supporting this view, Sameer Kamat said that space will play a decisive role in future wars. Emphasizing the need for collaboration, he said that some technologies can be taken from external sources, but it is imperative to develop indigenous capabilities in critical areas. DRDO is working on these areas, but success will require coordinated efforts at the level of the entire country.

At the same time, Lieutenant General Jhubin Minwala said that India will have to give priority to speed, flexibility and effective integration with private industry in its strategy. He warned that excessive reliance on any one agency is not appropriate and the country must adopt a diverse and dynamic model.

These statements indicate that there is a change in India’s strategic thinking, where space is no longer merely playing a supporting role but is emerging as a central element of national security. According to experts, only with the joint efforts of the government, private industry and educational institutions, the country will be able to develop a strong and self-reliant defense space system.
