Bangladesh worried over BJP’s possible victory in West Bengal elections

There is a close contest between BJP and Trinamool Congress regarding West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. For the first time, more than 90 percent voting has been recorded in the state. Although the election results are not troubling the opposition BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress, there is more concern in Bangladesh. A Bangladesh MP has expressed concern in the country’s Lok Sabha over the possible election results. There is a fear in Bangladesh that as soon as Bharatiya Janata Party comes to power in West Bengal, a large number of Bangladeshi infiltrators will be picked up and thrown back into Bangladesh, which will not be a good situation for Bangladesh.

National Citizen Party (NCP) MP from Rangpur, Akhtar Hussain, while giving a statement in the Parliament of Bangladesh, said that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power in West Bengal, it could lead to a refugee crisis. “If the exit polls show BJP’s victory and they form the government, they may send illegal immigrants to Bangladesh. This may create a humanitarian, economic and refugee crisis for us,” he said. His comment is about Bangladeshi Muslims who have infiltrated into India, and he is worried about their possible deportation across the border.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh government on Thursday (April 30) summoned India’s acting High Commissioner in Dhaka Pawan Badhe. During this meeting held in the Ministry of External Affairs, a strong protest was lodged against the recent statement of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Bangladeshi officials described these comments as unfair and harmful to bilateral relations.

In fact, it started after an interview given by the Chief Minister of Assam on April 15, in which he made controversial comments regarding India-Bangladesh relations. He had said, “I pray to God every morning that the situation like during the time of Yunus continues and relations do not improve.” He also said, “When India and Bangladesh have better relations, it becomes difficult to send back illegal immigrants. That’s why the people of Assam prefer the strained relationship between the two countries.”

Sarma also commented on the coordination between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh Border Guarding (BGB) and claimed that sometimes people are forcibly sent across due to the conditions prevailing at the border.
