West Bengal Elections 2026 Re Polling Taking Place At 15 Booths Today Due To Evm Tapes
Allegations of alleged tampering with EVMs amid the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026 have further heated up the political atmosphere. Re-polling is underway on Saturday (May 2) at 15 polling stations in South 24 Parganas district. This decision was taken by the Election Commission of India on the basis of complaints received during the voting held on April 29.
Of these 15 booths, 11 are located in Magrahat West assembly constituency and 4 in Diamond Harbor area. Voting is being conducted from 7 am to 6 pm amid tight security arrangements and the entire process is being conducted under the supervision of central forces.
In fact, during the voting, complaints came to light about tape being placed in front of the BJP button in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). Some reports alleged that the buttons on the machines were not functioning properly or had been disrupted. The Election Commission, in its instructions sent to the Chief Electoral Officer of the state, clarified that this step has been taken on the basis of reports received at the ground level and re-polling is mandatory in case of any verified irregularities.
Political reactions on this issue have also been sharp. BJP leader in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said, “What happened in Magrahat West is welcome. But repolling should have happened in more booths of Diamond Harbor and Falta as well… We respect the process of the Election Commission.”
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while welcoming the decision of re-polling, has demanded that more booths should be brought under its ambit. The party alleges that voters in some areas were prevented from voting in their favor. At the same time, Trinamool Congress (TMC) has rejected these allegations and accused BJP of conspiring to defame the electoral process.
Senior BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya claimed that there were incidents of tampering with EVM buttons, although he also admitted that voting this time was relatively fair due to strict monitoring by central forces.
It is noteworthy that in the last phase of voting held on April 29, about 90% voting was recorded, which shows the high participation of voters in this election. Now before the counting of votes on May 4, all eyes are on whether this controversy will affect the election results.
