New government will take oath in West Bengal on the day of Tagore Jayanti

After the massive victory of BJP in West Bengal, the discussion has intensified on who will be the next Chief Minister of the state. In the election results, BJP has secured 206 seats, which is a huge increase of 129 seats as compared to 77 seats last time. The name of Suvendu Adhikari is considered to be at the forefront in the race for the post of Chief Minister. He was the leader of opposition in the state for the last five years and in this election he defeated the current Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from her own Bhawanipur seat.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister of West Bengal will be held on May 9. State President Samik Bhattacharya has confirmed this date. He told that after the historic victory of BJP, the new government will take oath on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

Five names are being discussed for the post of Chief Minister. It is believed that BJP can make a woman the Chief Minister in response to Mamata Banerjee. Among the female contenders, the names of Roopa Ganguly and Agnimitra Paul are prominent. Roopa Ganguly has been associated with BJP for a long time and has held the responsibility of Mahila Morcha in the state.

Suvendu Adhikari, who came to BJP from TMC, became one of the prominent faces of the party and played the role of “giant killer” in the 2026 elections. In the race for the post of Chief Minister, he may face challenge from Samik Bhattacharya, Dilip Ghosh and Sukanta Majumdar.

Suvendu Adhikari has experience as a minister and leader of the opposition. At the same time, Dilip Ghosh is credited with strengthening the roots of BJP in Bengal and he also has the support of RSS. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had clarified during the elections that a candidate who is Bengali speaking and educated in Bengali medium will be selected for the post of Chief Minister.
