Coratia Technologies’ marine robots will protect India’s undersea data highway

Odisha-based deeptech startup Koratia Technologies has achieved a significant milestone in the field of India’s maritime security and protecting undersea data networks. The company has been awarded the contract to provide indigenous marine robots to the Indian Navy, aimed at monitoring and ensuring security of the country’s critical maritime infrastructure.

Founded in the year 2021 by Debendra Pradhan and Biswajit Swain, mechanical engineering graduates of NIT Rourkela, this startup has made a mark with its technical capability in a short time. The project was initially developed under an academic challenge of the Ministry of Earth Sciences to develop autonomous underwater robots. These robots also won international appreciation in the Singapore Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Challenge.

These robots from Koratia are designed to monitor, inspect and protect undersea fiber-optic cables, pipelines, bridges, ports and other critical structures. These systems can also perform tasks that are difficult or risky for human divers.

The company has received a contract worth Rs 66 crore under the iDEX scheme of the Defense Ministry, which shows the credibility and strategic importance of its technology. Additionally, the startup has also raised an investment of Rs 22 crore so far, which includes investors like Piper Serica Angel Fund, MGF Kavach and Pontiac Ventures.

In recent months, increasing tensions in West Asia and the threat posed by undersea cables in the Strait of Hormuz have further increased the importance of this region. Nearly 99 percent of the world’s Internet traffic is carried through these undersea cables, so any disruption could impact the global economy and communications system.

India currently has limited cable repair capacity, further increasing the need for indigenous surveillance and security systems. Koratia’s robots are considered an important step towards filling this gap.

The market for marine robotics is growing rapidly in the country, where companies like Planis Technologies and IROV are also in the competition. However, Koratiya’s contract with the Navy and its emphasis on indigenous technology may give it an edge in this sector.

The company’s move is in line with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, which aims to reduce foreign dependence in defense and technology sectors. This success of Coratia Technologies shows how India’s deeptech startups are playing an important role in meeting national security and strategic needs.
