Khela started: ED’s lookout notice issued against Kolkata DCP Shantanu Sinha Biswas.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued a lookout notice against Kolkata Police DCP Shantanu Sinha Biswas in a money laundering case. The agency fears that he may try to flee the country. This action has been taken in the money laundering case related to the alleged ‘Sona Pappu’ syndicate. ED is investigating this case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Earlier last month, the agency had raided several locations including Biswas’s residence in Golpark, Kolkata.

According to sources, the ED had summoned Biswas for questioning a day before the second and final phase of voting in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The investigating agency says that this case is related to Sona Pappu alias Biswajit Poddar, who runs the alleged criminal network.

After the issue of lookout notice, security agencies have been alerted, so that if the concerned officials try to leave the country, they can be stopped. ED suspects that Biswas may leave the country after coming under the scanner.

Shantanu Sinha Biswas is considered among the officials close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Recently he also appeared on the stage during the protest program of the state government. At that time Kolkata Police had clarified that they were present there in view of the security of the Chief Minister.

The case has created a stir in the political and administrative circles of the state. The opposition has targeted the government over the ED action, while there has been no official reaction from the ruling Trinamool Congress on this so far. The investigating agency says that it is investigating all aspects of the case and further action will be taken if necessary.
