Way clear for Vijay government in Tamil Nadu, TVK touches majority mark

Actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay is now seen to be on his way to becoming the next Chief Minister of the state. His party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has achieved majority in the assembly with the support of allies.

118 seats are needed for majority in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. TVK had emerged as the largest party in the elections by winning 108 seats, but fell short of a single majority. Now with the support of Congress, CPI, CPI(M) and VCK, the alliance figure has reached 119.

The seat math of the alliance is as follows TVK – 108 MLAs, Congress – 5 MLAs, CPI – 2 MLAs, CPI(M) – 2 MLAs, VCK – 2 MLAs i.e. total 119 MLAs. With this, the Vijay-led alliance has gone one seat ahead of the majority mark.

According to sources, Vijay may soon meet Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar and stake claim to form the government. Earlier, he had claimed to form the government twice, but the Governor did not invite him due to lack of sufficient support.

The biggest change in political developments came when Congress decided to distance itself from DMK and support TVK. According to reports, before the elections, Vijay had proposed an alliance to the Congress and also offered 75 seats, but the Congress at that time decided to remain with the DMK citing ideological reasons and anti-BJP national politics.

However, Congress changed its stance after the election results came and TVK became the largest party. After this, CPI, CPI(M) and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) also decided to separate from DMK and support Vijay.

There was also discussion in political circles that DMK and AIADMK together can make a strategy to keep TVK away from power. Amidst this apprehension, the left parties and VCK finally decided to come together with Vijay.

Vijay, popularly known as “Thalapathy” in Tamil cinema, had founded his party TVK in 2024. This was his first assembly election and in his very first attempt he brought about a big change in the politics of the state.

Political analysts are comparing Vijay with the film stars of Tamil Nadu who made a successful entry into politics through acting. These include M.G. Ramachandran, J. Names like Jayalalitha and Vijayakanth are included. Now the eyes of Tamil Nadu politics are fixed on the next step of the Governor and the possible swearing in of Vijay.
