Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani Appointed As The New Chief Of Defense Staff
Lieutenant General N. S. Raja Subramani (Retd) has been appointed as the next Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the country. He will also serve as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, from the date of assumption of charge. He will replace former CDS General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure ends on May 30 this year. Lieutenant General Subramani is currently serving as Military Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). He retired from the post of Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) on July 31 last year.
During his 39-year-long career in the Indian Army, he also served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Central Command. For his outstanding services he has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM). On 14 December 1985, he was commissioned in the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles.
In his military career spanning nearly four decades, he has led in various challenging areas and conflict situations. He commanded 16 Garhwal Rifles in anti-terrorist operations in Assam under Operation Rhino. Also led 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir and 17 Mountain Division in challenging conditions in the Central Region. He also has the distinction of commanding 2 Corps, the premier strike force of the Indian Army on the Western Front.
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan will be the Navy Chief
In another important military appointment, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the next chief of the Indian Navy. He currently serves as the Commander of the Western Naval Command. Current Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi will retire on May 31, after which Vice Admiral Swaminathan will take charge on the same day.
In his naval career, Admiral Swaminathan has commanded the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. Apart from this, he has also commanded the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, missile corvette INS Kulish and missile ships INS Vidyut and INS Vinash.
Admiral Swaminathan, who joined the Indian Navy as an officer on July 1, 1987, is considered an expert in communications and electronic warfare. Apart from the National Defense Academy, Khadakwasla, he has also received education from the College of Naval Warfare, Karanja, Maharashtra, the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham, UK and the United States Naval War College, Rhode Island, USA.
