Himanta Biswa Sarma Will Become The Chief Minister For The Second Consecutive Time The Date Has Been Fixed

After the historic victory in West Bengal and the swearing in of Suvendu Adhikari, now the official announcement of the formation of a new government has been made in ‘Assam’, the gateway to the North-East. Himanta Biswa Sarma has once again been unanimously elected as the leader in the BJP Legislature Party meeting. BJP National President JP Nadda formally announced his name, after which it has become clear that Himanta will take charge of Assam.

Himanta Biswa Sarma will take oath as Chief Minister on May 12 at 11 am. This will be the second time that he will hold the responsibility of the post of Chief Minister of Assam. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at Khanapara Veterinary College Field in Guwahati.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Ministers of about 22 states of the country have been invited to this grand ceremony, which symbolizes the growing influence of the BJP and the strategic victory of Assam.

To streamline the process of government formation in Assam, BJP had appointed former national president JP Nadda and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini as observers. In the meeting held on May 10, Himanta Biswa Sarma was elected unopposed as the leader of the legislature party. It may be noted that Sarma had submitted his resignation on May 6 and currently he is serving as the acting Chief Minister.

The election results for the 126-member Assam Assembly on May 4 have confirmed the popularity of the BJP, with the NDA (BJP-led alliance) winning a total of 82 seats, leaving the majority mark (64) far behind. The Congress was reduced to just 19 seats and 18 of these MLAs are Muslims. BOPF and AGP both got 10 seats each. Badruddin Ajmal’s party AIUDF’s support base fell badly and it got only 2 seats.

Assam’s mandate in the 2026 elections remained clear. The BJP received overwhelming support from predominantly Hindu voters, who prioritized the issue of cultural identity in the state and security against Bangladeshi infiltrators. At the same time, Congress could get success only in Muslim dominated areas, but their total number remained very less. Political analysts believe that the ‘tough and outspoken’ image of Himanta Biswa Sarma has instilled confidence among the public in protecting the Assamese identity.

Year 2016 BJP came to power for the first time, Sarbananda Sonowal became the Chief Minister. In 2021, Himanta Biswa Sarma became the Chief Minister for the first time. In 2026, Himanta Biswa Sarma returned to power for the second consecutive time by registering a landslide victory under his leadership. Preparations for the swearing in are in full swing in Guwahati and the entire city is covered with BJP flags and posters. This function will prove to be a big show of strength of BJP’s hold not only in Assam but in the entire North-East.
