Superstar Vijay Becomes Chief Minister Of Tamil Nadu The State Gets Its First Non Dravidian CM After 60 Years
A historic chapter has been added to the politics of Tamil Nadu on Sunday (10), actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay has taken oath as the Chief Minister of the state. Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay created history as the first non-Dravidian Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu by taking the oath of office and secrecy at a grand ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. After almost six decades, a leader of a non-Dravidian party has assumed power in the state.
As soon as Vijay, who arrived in white shirt, blazer and black trousers, started reciting the oath, the entire stadium echoed with applause and slogans. For his supporters, this moment was no less than a film climax. Thousands of workers were seen outside the stadium waving TVK flags, while supporters in many parts of the state celebrated by bursting crackers.
Vijay’s political journey is being considered as one of the most rapid and dramatic upsurge in Tamil Nadu politics. Vijay, who was popular as a superstar for a long time, took an active step in politics in recent years and fielded his party TVK in the election field. In the very first major electoral test, the party surprised everyone by emerging as the largest party by winning 108 seats in the 234-member assembly.

However, TVK was 10 seats short of the majority mark. After this, intense political talks continued for four days regarding government formation. Congress first announced its support to Vijay. Later the left parties, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League also extended unconditional support. After this Vijay staked claim to form the government and Governor Rajendra Arlekar invited him to form the government.
The swearing-in ceremony was special on both political and emotional levels. Vijay’s parents were present at the ceremony and looked emotional after seeing their son taking oath as the Chief Minister. Actress Trisha Krishnan also attended the ceremony. Seeing Trisha arriving in a blue silk saree, the fans present in the stadium gave a warm welcome. Vijay and Trisha have worked together in films for a long time and their personal relationship has often been in the news.
The presence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in this ceremony is also considered politically important. For the first time since 1967, Congress has become a part of a ruling coalition in Tamil Nadu. Congress supremo Rahul Gandhi specially reached Chennai on this occasion.
Vijay warmly welcomed Governor Rajendra Arlekar before taking oath as the Chief Minister. Tamil Nadu has seen frequent conflicts between the Governor and the state government in recent years, hence Vijay’s behavior is being seen as a political signal.
Now after the swearing in, the next big challenge will be the floor test in the Assembly. Under the constitutional process, the Vijay government will have to prove majority in the House.
