Vijay Sworn in as Tamil Nadu CM: Historic Power Shift Rocks State Politics
Chennai: Chennai witnessed a major political development as C. Joseph Vijay, widely known as Thalapathy Vijay, officially took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The ceremony was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium at 10 AM amid high public and political attention, marking a significant moment in the state’s political history.
Strong Electoral Debut for TVK
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) made a powerful entry into Tamil Nadu politics by winning 108 seats in its first Assembly election. The party later strengthened its position by securing support from key allies, taking its total strength to 120 MLAs in the 234-member House. This enabled TVK to comfortably cross the majority mark of 118 and stake claim to form the government.
Governor’s Invitation and Formal Process
According to official communication from Lok Bhavan, Vijay met the Governor and submitted his claim as leader of the TVK Legislature Party. He also presented letters of support from major political allies including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML. Following this, the Governor formally invited him to form the government and instructed him to seek a confidence vote by May 13, 2026.
End of Political Uncertainty
The formation of the new government ended days of suspense over post-poll alliances in the state. Political negotiations after the results played a key role in bringing multiple parties together under the TVK-led coalition, ensuring a stable majority in the Assembly.
Historic Political Shift in Tamil Nadu
With this oath, Vijay becomes the first leader outside the DMK and AIADMK dominance to assume the Chief Minister’s office since 1967. Analysts view this as one of the most significant political transitions in Tamil Nadu’s modern history, signaling a major shift in voter sentiment and alliance politics.
Next Steps for Government
The new administration is expected to face a confidence vote in the Assembly by the scheduled deadline. Early expectations suggest focus on governance reforms, welfare schemes and development initiatives as TVK begins its tenure in power.
