Health partner beneficiaries in West Bengal will get the benefits of Ayushman Bharat scheme!

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday announced that people currently availing the benefits of the ‘Swasthya Sathi’ scheme in West Bengal will automatically be enrolled under the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ scheme from July this year.

While ‘Ayushman Bharat’ is the central government’s health insurance scheme, ‘Swasthya Sathi’ is the state’s own health insurance scheme which was started by the previous Mamata Banerjee-led government. To keep the ‘Swasthya Sathi’ scheme effective in West Bengal, the previous government did not allow the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ scheme to be implemented in the state.

However, after the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled state government came to power, it was decided that the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ scheme would be implemented in West Bengal like other BJP-ruled states, the Chief Minister told media persons on Saturday.

At present six crore people are registered under the ‘Swasthya Sathi’ scheme in West Bengal. From July, all of them will be linked to the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ scheme. He told that only then these beneficiaries will get ‘Ayushman Bharat’ cards.

He also said that those citizens of West Bengal who are currently outside the state to earn livelihood will also be included in the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ scheme.

Speaking on the occasion, the official said that a total of Rs 2,103 crore was sanctioned for West Bengal under the Central Government’s National Health Mission, of which the state had already received Rs 500 crore on Saturday.

The Chief Minister said that the total approval of the Central Government for the ‘Ayushman Bharat’ scheme is Rs 976 crore.

According to him, at present there is not a single medical college in four districts of West Bengal. The Chief Minister official said that the proposed land proposal for setting up medical colleges in these four districts will soon be sent to the Central Government. Also, the proposal to set up a unit of All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIMS) in North Bengal will be finalized on the basis of discussion with the elected public representatives there.

He also informed that more than 7 lakh cervical cancer vaccines will be provided in West Bengal. The Chief Minister said that these vaccines will be given to girls in the age group of 14 to 15 years. Its official start in West Bengal will be from May 30.
