CID summons Abhishek Banerjee in fake signature case
The Criminal Investigation Department on Saturday (May 30) issued summons to Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the investigation into the fake signature case. The matter pertains to the letter that All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) had sent to the Assembly Secretariat on May 19. In this letter Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay was named as the leader of opposition in the state assembly. It is alleged that the signatures of some TMC MLAs on this letter were fake.
According to officials, a complaint was lodged by the Assembly Secretariat at the Hare Street Police Station in Kolkata on Wednesday, after which the case was handed over to the CID.
A CID official said that notice was served to Banerjee on Saturday afternoon and she has been asked to appear for questioning at the state police headquarters Bhawani Bhawan at 12 noon on Monday.
According to the police, TMC had first sent a letter to the Assembly Secretariat on May 6 regarding the appointment of Sobhandev Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition. However, this letter was not sent by the TMC legislature party, although it is mandatory to do so. After this, a second letter bearing the signatures of TMC MLAs was presented on May 19. Investigation found that some of the signatures present in it did not match the official records of the Assembly.
At around 1.30 pm on Friday afternoon, a five-member CID team reached Shantiniketan Bhawan on Harish Mukherjee Road in South Kolkata. A person present there, who identified himself as a domestic worker, said that Abhishek Banerjee was not at home.
Meanwhile, Banerjee returned from Beleghata to his residence on Kalighat Road. He had recently gone to meet the family of TMC worker Biswajit Patnaik, who was allegedly killed in the post-poll violence. Speaking to the media, Banerjee said, “I do not live in Shantiniketan. If anyone wants to meet me, he will have to come here. I don’t know why the CID has come. Till now I have not received any notice. If I am served a notice, I will face him legally.”
After this, the CID team waited near Shantiniketan Bhawan for about an hour and then reached Banerjee’s residence on Kalighat Road to serve the notice.
After receiving the notice, Banerjee said, “I have received the notice, but I have not yet seen its contents. I will seek legal advice. I have nothing to hide. Earlier, I have cooperated with the ED and CBI and have appeared before them for questioning 10 to 12 times. The investigating agencies are being used for political vendetta.”
