4 6 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Bay Of Bengal Tremors Recorded At A Depth Of 10 Km
A moderate intensity earthquake was recorded in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday (June 2) morning. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the intensity of the earthquake was measured at 4.6 on the Richter scale. This earthquake occurred on June 2, 2026 at 7:43 am Indian time and its depth was recorded at about 10 kilometers below the sea surface.
According to information released by the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Bay of Bengal. The latitude of the earthquake was recorded at 14.027 degrees north and longitude 93.132 degrees east. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth (shallow focus), due to which its tremors could be felt relatively more in the marine area.
NCS shared the information on social media platform X saying, “EQ of M: 4.6, On: 02/06/2026 07:43:17 IST, Lat: 14.027 N, Long: 93.132 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal.”
There has been no report of any loss of life or property, maritime disturbance or tsunami-like situation immediately after the earthquake. The administration and concerned agencies are keeping an eye on the situation.
It is noteworthy that in February this year also an earthquake of moderate intensity was recorded in the Bay of Bengal. The intensity of that earthquake, which occurred at 5:12 am on February 11, 2026, was measured at 4.3 on the Richter scale. Even at that time, the depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers and its center was located at 14.94 degrees north latitude and 90.18 degrees east longitude.
According to seismology, earthquakes can occur from the earth’s surface to a depth of about 700 kilometers. For scientific study, their depth is divided into three categories, shallow, intermediate and deep earthquakes.
According to data from the US Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes with a depth of 0 to 70 kilometers are called shallow earthquakes. Earthquakes with a depth of 70 to 300 kilometers fall in the moderate category, while earthquakes with a depth of 300 to 700 kilometers are considered deep earthquakes. Generally, earthquakes occurring at a depth of more than 70 kilometers are called deep-focus earthquakes.
Experts believe that the impact of earthquakes occurring at shallow depth can be felt relatively more on the surface. However, no major danger or damage has been reported from this 4.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday.
