Tanker Carrying 24 Indians Attacked Near Oman In The Strait Of Hormuz
Amid Israel-Iran tension, information has come to light about an attack on a ship near the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Indian seafarers’ organization ‘Forward Seamen’s Union of India’, there are 24 Indian sailors on board this ship and they need immediate help. While sharing a video on the social media platform ‘X’, the union said that a distress alert has been sent from the ship. The coordinates of the ship’s position are also given in the post. In the video, black smoke is seen coming out from the front part of the ship.
A commercial tanker carrying 24 Indian sailors sent a message of emergency help after it was reported to have been attacked while en route to Duqm port in Oman. The incident comes amid growing security concerns in West Asia. According to the information, the motor tanker ship named ‘Marivex’ was working near the coast of Oman when its crew sought immediate help, warning of the danger of the ship catching fire and sinking.
According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, all 24 Indian personnel aboard MT Marivex are safe. Giving preliminary information, Director of Shipping Department of the Ministry, Opesh Kumar Sharma said that the officials received information about this incident at around 1:30 pm. “This is the initial information we have received and as per available data, all Indian sailors are currently safe,” Sharma said. He further said that the government is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian embassies abroad, Indian Navy and Defense Ministry to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of the crew.
In an audio message, an employee on board the ship described extensive damage to the ship and difficulties in landing emergency rescue equipment in the water. He said, “Sir, this is the motor tanker Marivex. Our ship is on fire and the ship is sinking. The lifeboats are also on fire. The lifeboats cannot be lowered. One of the lifeboats is lost, she is damaged. The rope is on fire. Please help.” The caller repeatedly called the name of the ship and told that the situation on the ship was deteriorating rapidly.
The employee also alleged that the ship was attacked by a missile. The audio claimed, “The US Navy has attacked our Indian cabin with a missile. There are holes in the bottom of our ship. The ship is on fire. Please help.”
