Celebrating June 25 as ‘Constitution Murder Day’ is justice to history: Nitin Naveen!

BJP national president Nitin Naveen on Thursday said that for decades, an attempt was made to erase the dark chapter of Emergency from the country’s collective memory. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, justice has been done to history by deciding to observe June 25 as ‘Constitution Killing Day’.

Nitin Naveen wrote on social media platform

He said, “On June 12, 1975, the Allahabad High Court had declared the election of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi illegal. After this, priority was given to saving power rather than national interest. To save the chair of one person, the freedom of the entire country was taken hostage and an attempt was made to crush the constitutional values and democratic principles established by Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.”

Nitin Naveen claimed that many leaders and activists who raised their voice to protect democracy were arrested at that time.

He said, “A large number of leaders and activists who raised their voice in support of democracy were put in jail. Thousands of democracy fighters, including Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani, were sent to jail.”

He said that tremendous pressure was put on press freedom and civil rights. Censorship was imposed on the press, forced sterilization campaigns were carried out, fundamental rights were taken away and civil liberties were suppressed through laws like MISA. “This was not just a political crisis, but a direct attack on democracy.”

Nitin Naveen said that many changes were made in the Constitution with the aim of completely centralizing power. Many amendments were made in the Constitution to make the power autocratic. Attempts were made to limit the powers of the judiciary, but India’s democratic spirit could not be suppressed.

“From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, youth and common citizens unitedly fought against this dictatorship and paved the way for the restoration of democracy,” he alleged.

He said, “During that period of struggle, young campaigner Narendra Modi was spreading the message of the movement from door to door by disguising himself while avoiding arrest. Keeping the national interest and protection of democracy paramount, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh had merged its organization with the Janata Party.”

He also praised Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

He said, “Thousands of volunteers of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh worked underground to protect democracy, while the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad organized student power and launched a public awareness campaign. This spirit of sacrifice, dedication and patriotism is the golden chapter of Indian politics.”

Nitin Naveen also targeted Congress and said that the party which imposed emergency is today trying to portray itself as the biggest protector of democracy. Today the country is witnessing a strange irony. Those who made the biggest attack on democracy are today trying to portray themselves as its biggest defenders.

He accused the opposition of raising questions on democratic institutions when election results are not favourable. When the public rejects them in the elections, they lose faith in the Election Commission and questions are raised on EVMs.

When the decisions of the courts do not suit their political interests, questions are raised on the impartiality of the judiciary. Congress politics has now become a politics of blame instead of accountability.

He further said, “If Parliament does not function, the government is blamed, if the elections are lost, the system is blamed and if the public does not support, the institutions are held responsible.”

Questioning the Congress’s stand, he said, “The biggest question is why the party that talks about the Constitution today did not apologize unconditionally to the country for the Emergency? If it was really concerned about the Constitution, it should have first apologized to the country for the crime of murder of democracy.”

He said, “For decades, the struggle of democracy fighters and this attack on the Constitution was kept on the margins of history.”

He appreciated the decision of the Central Government to observe June 25 as ‘Constitution Killing Day’. He said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, justice has been done to history by deciding to celebrate June 25 as ‘Constitution Killing Day’.

“This day, while reminding us of the past, also strengthens our resolve to always remain alert and dedicated to protecting the Constitution, democracy and civil liberties.”
