Kharge shared the copy of the letter on social media platform 'X'. He wrote in the letter, “Prime Minister, I had last written to you on July 16 requesting that an all-party meeting be called to discuss the government's proposals for delimitation. I had also requested that before presenting these proposals in a special session of Parliament, all political parties should be given sufficient time to study them in detail.”
Kharge wrote, “I am writing now to reiterate this request because the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister has publicly stated in a television interview last night that such a special session of Parliament can be called. Perhaps this is the reason why there is a continuous delay in the prorogation of the monsoon session.”
The Congress President made three demands while clarifying the party's stand in the letter. He wrote, “The stand of the Indian National Congress is very clear. First, the current membership strength of 543 Lok Sabha should be maintained for the next 25 years.
Kharge urged the Prime Minister to keep in mind two things before moving ahead as suggested by the Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister. First, call a meeting of all the parties to discuss whatever delimitation proposals the government has in mind. Second, give sufficient time to all political parties and state governments to study such proposals.
At the end of the letter, Kharge wrote that this is a very important issue for the country. Please do not try to impose it by force again like what was done on 16th and 17th April.
Let us tell you that the issue of delimitation is considered very sensitive in the southern states. The opposition alleges that delimitation on the basis of population will reduce the representation of the southern states, which have done a better job in population control. Congress is continuously demanding to call an all-party meeting.
