Starship's engine failure has put NASA's upcoming lunar mission in trouble. If Starship is not ready on time, NASA could choose Blue Origin's 'Blue Moon' lander. This delay not only jeopardizes NASA, but also SpaceX's Starlink satellite expansion and other commercial projects, putting the company under extreme time pressure.
What happened during the test flight?
SpaceX conducted the 14th test flight of the Starship rocket from its base in Texas. The main objective of this mission was to send the Starship directly into Earth's orbit for the first time and deploy a satellite. The rocket made a successful flight and also successfully launched 26 'Starlink' satellites into space. However, after separation from the main booster rocket, one of the Starship's main Raptor engines suddenly stopped working. Due to this technical problem, the rocket had to land in the Pacific Ocean, ending the scheduled 10-hour flight in just 3 hours.
Challenges faced by 'Artemis 3' mission
NASA is working with the goal of landing humans again on the Moon's South Pole by 2028 through its 'Artemis 3' mission. NASA has selected SpaceX's Starship for this mission to safely land astronauts on the lunar surface.
However, to achieve this 2028 target, Starship must first complete unmanned docking and successful tests in Earth orbit in 2027. According to aerospace experts, if the Raptor engine failure was caused by a major design flaw, SpaceX would have to replace its entire rocket fleet. The extra time required could push NASA's lunar missions back by months or years.
NASA has an alternative in the form of 'Blue Origin'
Due to continuous delays in the development of Starship, NASA has already developed another strategy as a safety measure. Jeff Bezos' company 'Blue Origin' is building a lander named 'Blue Moon'. According to NASA Chief and space experts, NASA will give first priority to the lander which will be declared completely ready and safe for the first lunar mission. Therefore, if SpaceX is not able to correct the mistake in time, then this big opportunity may go to Blue Origin.
Global competition with China and commercial setback
US wants to send its astronauts to the moon before China, because China has planned to send a human mission to the moon by 2030. There is a lot of pressure on NASA to maintain its lead in this global race. The engine failure would also hurt SpaceX's own commercial goals, as the company desperately needs the continued success of its Starship rocket to rapidly expand its Starlink internet satellite network. SpaceX and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating the exact cause of the engine failure.
