23 Opposition Parties Write to CJI Surya Kant, Raise Concerns Over EC’s SIR

New Delhi: Twenty-three Opposition parties under the INDIA Bloc have written to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, expressing concerns over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise and alleging bias in the conduct of electoral processes. The parties have appealed to the “conscience of the judiciary”, urging judicial intervention to safeguard democratic institutions.

The letter has been signed by leaders from several Opposition parties, including the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Shiv Sena (UBT), DMK and AAP.

Concerns Over SIR Exercise

According to Opposition sources, the four-page letter alleges that the Election Commission’s SIR exercise has been used against Opposition parties and raises concerns over what it describes as the “biased conduct” of the poll body and the “manipulation” of electoral results.

The signatories have reportedly argued that when other democratic institutions fail to provide relief, citizens look to the judiciary to uphold constitutional values.

Senior Leaders Among Signatories

The letter has been signed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, among others.

The contents of the letter have not yet been officially released.

DMK, AAP Participation Draws Attention

The inclusion of the DMK and AAP is being viewed as politically significant, as both parties had earlier distanced themselves from the Congress-led INDIA Bloc. Opposition leaders said the joint representation reflects a broader effort to present a united front on issues concerning the electoral process.

According to Opposition sources, the letter cites examples from different states to support its allegations regarding the conduct of election authorities and seeks judicial attention to ensure free and fair elections.
