SP MLA Kamal Akhtar resigns from the post of Chief Whip, political discussions intensify

Moradabad. SP MLA Kamal Akhtar from Kanth Assembly Seat in Moradabad District of UP has resigned from the post of Chief Whip of the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. According to sources, his differences with SP MP Ruchi Veera from Moradabad were in the news for some time.

According to sources, his differences with SP MP Ruchi Veera from Moradabad were in the news for some time. Recently, party president Akhilesh Yadav had also held a meeting with both the parties in Lucknow to resolve the dispute. It was believed that the matter had been calmed down, but now Kamal Akhtar’s resignation has given rise to speculations again.

He said that I have resigned from the post of Chief Whip on the orders of National President Akhilesh Yadav. He is our leader, it is our duty to follow his orders. The responsibilities of leaders keep changing from time to time in the party. And this is part of this routine change. I was on this post for about one and a half years. Now a new leader in the party will get this responsibility. I have to contest elections, so my focus is now on my seat.

After Manoj Pandey rebelled, SP made Kamal Akhtar the chief whip. Manoj Pandey became the Chief Whip after becoming a rebel. SP had made Kamal Akhtar its Chief Whip in the UP Assembly on July 28, 2024. Before him, Rae Bareli MLA Manoj Kumar Pandey was the Chief Whip. But Manoj had resigned from the post of Chief Whip during the Rajya Sabha elections in February 2024, taking an anti-party stand and voting in favor of BJP candidates. This post became vacant only after his defection, on which Kamal Akhtar was later appointed. Why is the post of Chief Whip important?

The post of Chief Whip is important in the parliamentary system. It is mainly responsible for ensuring discipline, attendance and voting of the political party. The main job of the Chief Whip is to maintain discipline in the party, to direct the members of the legislature party to behave as per the policy and line of the party. Members also have to be told how to vote on an issue. Violation of the whip may provide for disqualification of the member.

The Chief Whip is also responsible for keeping all the party members present during voting and important discussions in the Assembly sessions and ensuring the presence of sufficient number of members at the time of voting. The Chief Whip acts as a bridge between the party leadership and the MLAs. It is also the job of the Chief Whip to convey the opinions, dissatisfaction or suggestions of the members to the leadership and to convey the party’s position to the members.
