4 Southeast Asian countries among world’s 20 best for travelers this year

Indonesia ranked 8th, according to the annual Readers’ Choice Awards’ survey that asks travelers to rate countries on factors such as culture, attractions, cuisine, and overall experience.

“Bali is undoubtedly the touristic hub of the nation, offering everything from holistic jungle retreats to backpacking havens and chic beach clubs. But as the Balinese sense visitor numbers tipping into overtourism territory, the rest of the world’s largest archipelagic country comes into the spotlight,” the magazine wrote.

Thailand claimed the 10th spot.

Thailand’s enduring popularity stems from its diverse landscapes and relatively easy transport connections.

Travelers can move between destinations by train, domestic flights, boats and overnight buses. From Chiang Mai’s lively night markets to the country’s picturesque islands, Thailand offers a wide range of experiences.

Vietnam ranked 14th on the list.

Vietnam welcomed a record 21.2 million international visitors in 2025. Although visitor numbers remain below long-time rival Thailand’s, tourism is growing as travelers seek out its diverse landscapes, towns and cultures.

Improved air connections have also made previously hard-to-reach destinations more accessible, turning Vietnam from an emerging destination into one firmly on travelers’ itineraries, the magazine wrote.

Cambodia ranked 16th.

Cambodia is best known for Angkor Wat, but its appeal extends far beyond the ancient temple complex.

Travelers can explore Phnom Penh’s lively markets, the remote Cardamom Mountains and pristine beaches, especially during the dry season from November to April.

Greece was ranked the best country in the world for tourists, followed by Japan and Italy.

The Readers’ Choice Awards, selected by over 800,000 readers, is the longest-running honor in the travel industry that recognizes excellence in hotels, resorts, and destinations worldwide.
