From Prahaar To Kargil: Nana Patekar Left Bollywood At Its Peak For India Pak War; Lost 20 Kg Serving With Army

Mumbai: Nana Patekar's connection with the Indian Army went far beyond his famous role in Prahaar. During the 1999 Kargil War, the actor put his film career on hold and sought special permission to join troops near the frontline.

From Bollywood To The Kargil Front

At the height of his acting career, Patekar decided to serve alongside Indian soldiers during the Kargil conflict. His decision was backed by years of military training. While preparing for his 1991 film Prahaar, he had trained with the Maratha Light Infantry for nearly three years.

When war broke out in 1999, Patekar approached senior Army officers seeking permission to join the troops. His request was initially rejected because he was a civilian. He then contacted Defense Minister George Fernandes, who eventually gave him permission after hearing about his extensive military training.

He Spent More Than Two Weeks Near The LoC

Patekar spent more than a fortnight near the Line of Control in August 1999. During his stay, he assisted Army personnel and also spent several days working at a military hospital.

The actor later recalled that he was part of a Quick Reaction Team during his time in Kargil. His experience exposed him to the difficult conditions faced by soldiers during the conflict.

'I Was 76 Kg, Came Back At 56 Kg'

The physical toll of the experience was significant. Patekar recalled that he weighed around 76 kg when he arrived in Srinagar but was down to 56 kg when he returned.

Despite the extraordinary nature of his experience, Patekar generally kept details of his time with the Army private. His Kargil stint remains one of the most unusual chapters in the career of an actor who had already built a strong association with the armed forces through Prahaar and his military training.
