The much-awaited India vs New Zealand series is losing its shine even before the first ball is bowled. Injuries continue to trouble both teams, and now New Zealand have suffered another massive setback. Their 6ft 6in tall pace sensation, Will O’Rourke, has been ruled out of the ODI and Test series against India.
The 25-year-old fast bowler is still recovering from injuries to his left hamstring and calf. New Zealand Cricket confirmed on October 10 that O’Rourke will miss the series as a precaution, with the team management targeting his return for the Australia Test series in December.
Why Will O’Rourke’s Absence Is a Big Relief for India
O’Rourke has quickly established himself as one of New Zealand’s most dangerous fast bowlers. Standing 6ft 6in tall, he generates uncomfortable bounce that can trouble even technically strong batters.
Despite playing just 14 Tests, O’Rourke has already taken 49 wicketshighlighting his impressive wicket-taking ability.
His absence could prove particularly important for India in New Zealand conditions, where extra bounce and seam movement often make life difficult for visiting batters.
Imagine facing Kyle Jamieson from one end and Will O’Rourke from the other. Two towering fast bowlers capable of extracting steep bounce could have created serious problems for India’s batting lineup.
Fortunately for India, that particular threat has now been removed from the upcoming series.
Injury Problems Continue for India and New Zealand
The series has already been affected by several injury concerns.
Rachin Ravindra’s shoulder injury has raised questions over his availability, while Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes have been ruled out of the T20I series. India also have fitness and workload concerns involving Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.
New Zealand coach Rob Walter confirmed that O’Rourke was being considered for both the ODI and Test squads, but the medical team decided he needed additional recovery time.
For New Zealand, losing such a promising wicket-taking fast bowler is a significant blow. For Indian batters, however, it removes one of the toughest challenges they could have faced on this tour.
