Cinema doesn’t always get its timing right. A few Bollywood films slipped past audiences almost entirely when they first hit theatres, only to claw their way back into public memory years later through television reruns, DVDs, or streaming, picking up the fan following along the way that they never managed at the ticket window. Here are seven films that took their time getting to cult status.
1. Andaz Apna Apna (1994)
This Aamir Khan-Salman Khan comedy barely registered at the box office when it first came out. It was television, not the theatrical run, that eventually gave the film its second life, playing it on loop over the years until an entire generation had memorised its lines without even trying.
2. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)
Commercial success eluded this satire on release, but its standing has only climbed since. It’s now spoken of as one of the sharpest political comedies to come out of Hindi cinema, a film that many say simply arrived before its audience was ready for it.
3. Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986)
This comedy went almost unnoticed when it hit screens. Years later, though, viewers began picking up on the social commentary woven through its humour, and it’s found an appreciation now that it never had at the time.
4. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
It wasn’t a flop by any measure, but the film’s real cultural pull built up slowly over time. It’s since become one of the defining tearjerkers of its decade, with its lines still surfacing often enough to keep it firmly in the nostalgia of 2000s Bollywood.
5. Rangeela (1995)
Box office numbers were modest at best, yet Rangeela has since been looked back on as something of a landmark for its music and styling. Filmmakers and fans still point to its soundtrack and visual language as reference points today.
6. Company (2002)
This gangster drama was well received at the time, but its true influence on the genre only became clear looking back. The way it approached crime storytelling went on to shape several films that followed.
7. Om Shanti Om (2007)
This one’s the outlier here, a hit from day one. But even so, its cultural standing has only grown further since, evolving into something close to a pop culture staple, with its dialogues, music and reincarnation storyline still doing the rounds in memes and everyday chatter.
What these seven films really show is that opening weekend collections don’t always capture the full picture. Sometimes a film simply needs a few more years, and a few more rewatches, to reach the audience it was meant for all along.
