News India Live, Digital Desk: The report of the ambitious socio-economic survey conducted by the Telangana government has been made public, the data of which is presenting a frightening picture of caste and economic inequality in the state. According to the report, Scheduled Castes (SC) in Telangana are three times more backward than the general category. At the same time, Backward Class (BC) has also been found to be 2.7 times more backward than the upper castes. The state government has released a special ‘Backward Index Score’ in this regard, which reflects the pathetic condition of the castes in numbers. Mathematics of Backward Index: ‘Dakkal’ at the bottom and ‘Kapu’ at the top. Telangana Backward Class Welfare Minister P. Prabhakar, while sharing the results of the survey, said that the higher the score in the index, the more backward is the caste it is considered to be. According to the report, ‘Dakkal’ caste has been found to be the most backward in the state, with an index score of 116. On the contrary, the ‘Kapu’ community coming from the upper caste community has emerged as the most powerful and leading caste in the state, whose score was only 12. The Kapu community owns a large amount of agricultural land and has been politically and socially strong for a long time. Huge income gap: 78% of the backward classes earn less than Rs 1 lakh. The income inequality revealed in the survey is worrying. There are 78 percent people from backward castes of the state whose annual income is Rs 1 lakh or less. On the other hand, there are 13 percent people from affluent communities whose annual income is between Rs 5 lakh and Rs 50 lakh. The situation of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (SC/ST) class is even more dire; Only 2.1 percent of the people of this category are able to earn more than Rs 5 lakh in a year. 135 castes yearning for basic facilities. According to the report, out of the total 142 castes of Telangana, 135 castes are socially and economically backward. The population of these castes is 67 percent of the total population of the state. The status of basic facilities is that: 21% of the population still does not have regular supply of drinking water. 13% people are still deprived of basic facilities like toilet. 6% houses have not yet got electricity connection. Poor condition measured on 42 indicators: Far from access to education and health. The state government had fixed a total of 42 indicators to measure the backwardness of the castes. In the study of a total of 242 castes, it was found that out of 135 backward castes, 69 are backward classes, 41 are scheduled castes and 25 are tribes. The report clarifies that these castes not only lack employment and education, but their access to hospitals is also extremely limited. Their houses are small and due to being landless, they are left far behind on the social security front. The government says that this inequality is a major challenge for the development of the state.
