Mob armed with sticks attacks forest office, ruckus near Bhutan border in Assam; A forest worker injured
Assam Chirang District Violence: The situation became tense after the action to remove encroachment in the area adjacent to the Bhutan border in Chirang district of Assam. The Forest Department had detained some people on charges of encroaching on reserved land. This action was taken in the Ripu-Chirang reserved forest area, which is a sensitive area located near the border.
According to officials, complaints of illegal felling and encroachment were being received in this area for a long time, after which this strict step was taken. Seeing the seriousness of the matter, the police took immediate action.

Local people gathered in large numbers in support of the detained people and started protesting. The situation went out of control when the protesters entered the Runikhata range office and vandalized it. The mob set government vehicles on fire and also burnt office furniture and threw it on the road.

If media reports are to be believed, it is known that the protesters tried to block the road. Many people including a forest worker were injured in this violence. It is alleged that the mob had come armed with sticks and created a ruckus.

Protestors made allegations
As soon as information about increasing violence was received, senior police officers and additional forces reached the spot. Police intervened to control the situation and gradually dispersed the crowd. The protesters alleged that the forest department attacked them during the first day’s action, in which two women were injured. The administration appealed to the people to maintain peace and said that if there is any complaint then it should be presented officially. A senior official clarified that damaging government property and blocking roads is not the solution to any problem. At present, the situation in the area is said to be under control, but security forces are deployed as a precautionary measure.
