If caste is written on the vehicle, it will cost heavily, challan of Rs 5,000 and even jail.

Rules on Displaying Caste on Vehicles: You must have often seen such vehicles on the roads on which the name of caste or community is proudly written. Many people consider it their identity, but now this habit can cost you dearly. The traffic police has started taking strict action against such vehicles and legal action is also being taken along with heavy fines.

What does the law say? Know the complete rules

According to the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989, only the registration number should be written on the number plate of the vehicle. Rule 50 clearly states that it is illegal to write any kind of name, sticker or additional words on the number plate.

If a person tampers with the number plate, a fine of ₹5,000 can be imposed for the first time under Section 192. At the same time, if the mistake is repeated, a fine of up to ₹ 10,000 or a jail sentence of up to one year can be imposed.

Not only the number plate, but also the body of the vehicle is banned.

Many people also get caste related words written on the rear glass or body of the car. The police also consider this a violation of rules. Under sections 177 and 179(1), a challan ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹2,500 can be issued for such unauthorized writing or sticker. Special campaigns are being run in this regard in states like Uttar Pradesh. Challans have been issued on thousands of vehicles in Noida and Ghaziabad for this reason.

Why has the government imposed the ban?

The government believes that writing caste on vehicles can affect social harmony. Moreover, having extra things on the number plate makes it difficult to identify the vehicle at the time of an accident or crime.

Keeping road safety in mind, HSRP (High Security Registration Plate) has been made mandatory for all vehicles, so that identification is easy and rules are followed.
