Italy: Two Indian citizens shot dead outside Gurudwara

Rome, April 20. Two Indian nationals were shot dead outside a Gurudwara in northern Italy. Investigators have suspected the attack to be a well-planned conspiracy. The incident took place late Friday night in Covo, in the province of Bergamo, when the two were coming out of a warehouse being used as a place of worship for Vaisakhi celebrations.

According to the report of daily newspaper ‘La Sicilia’, the firing took place a little before midnight, in the square outside Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur Ji, located in the industrial area of the city. The deceased have been identified as Rajinder Singh, 48, of Kovo, and Gurmeet Singh, 48, of nearby Agnadello.

According to the report, an attacker came near Rajinder and Gurmeet and fled in the car after the firing. Investigators found about ten empty cartridges at the scene, deepening suspicions that it was a premeditated murder. Investigation is currently underway to identify and arrest the accused. Also, the police is investigating the possible reasons behind the murders.

Authorities have ruled out the possibility that the shooting was the result of a spontaneous altercation. Instead, preliminary investigation results point to what authorities have described as a “cold-blooded murder.”

An eyewitness told the media that the alleged shooter was also ‘an Indian’, who frequently visited the same Gurudwara. The eyewitness also claimed that a third person was also hit by a bullet during the attack. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local Indian community, especially as it occurred on the eve of Baisakhi celebrations on Saturday, which local officials and community members were to attend.
