West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee wrote in X Post on Sunday, “It is extremely unfortunate that the Prime Minister chose to mislead the nation instead of addressing it honestly. I want to put this on record. Trinamool Congress has always advocated higher political representation for women. We have the highest proportion of elected women representatives in both Parliament and state legislatures. In the Lok Sabha, 37.9% of our elected members are women. In the Rajya Sabha, We have nominated 46% women members; the question of opposing women’s reservation does not arise, nor has it ever arisen.

He further wrote, “What we fundamentally oppose is the process of delimitation that the Modi government was conspiring to implement by using women as shields to further its vested political agenda. What we fundamentally oppose is the alteration of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution, the division of this nation, and the capture of power through ‘gerrymandering’—in which political boundaries are This is done again to allow BJP-ruled states to get more representation at the expense of others. This is an attack on federal democracy and we will not see it happening quietly.”

Regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill, the TMC chief further wrote, “If this government was really serious about this noble cause, then why did it wait for almost three years after the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed on September 28, 2023? When elections are being held in many states, why was it passed in such a hurry? And why was it linked to delimitation? Trinamool Congress has stood with women for decades. We will continue to do so in future also. But we will not listen to anyone preaching on a subject which the ruling party neither understands nor respects.”

Mamata Banerjee wrote, “And Prime Minister Ji, the next time you address the nation, must you be so courageous that you do so from the floor of Parliament—the place where your words are scrutinized, where you face challenges and where you have to live up to your accountability. What you did yesterday was cowardly, hypocritical and two-faced. You feel power slipping from your hands. And you can only hold on for a little longer.” Willing to go to any extent to retain power. That’s all.”
