Heatwave Tightens Grip on North India as Temperatures Surge Across Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh – Obnews
A developing heatwave is beginning to affect large parts of North India, with daytime temperatures climbing well above seasonal averages and expected to rise further in the coming days. Weather officials report that several locations across Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh have already recorded temperatures between 3.1°C and 5°C higher than normal levels, signaling the early arrival of intense summer conditions across the region.
Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department indicate that maximum temperatures across Punjab and Haryana could increase by an additional 2°C to 4°C by April 24. Authorities have warned that localized heatwave conditions are likely to affect parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh between April 21 and April 23. Some areas of Haryana are also expected to experience unusually warm nighttime temperatures during this period, which can increase health risks and discomfort for residents.
In several districts across Punjab and Haryana, daytime temperatures have already crossed the 40°C mark in isolated areas, while most locations in both states are currently experiencing highs ranging between 37°C and 40°C. These elevated readings suggest that heat stress conditions may intensify if the upward trend continues through the week.
The rising temperatures are creating additional challenges for farmers visiting grain procurement centres to sell freshly harvested wheat crops. Many farmers report spending extended periods waiting for their produce to be collected, often under direct sunlight. Some have raised concerns about insufficient access to drinking water and basic facilities at several mandis, which is increasing the physical strain during already demanding harvesting and marketing operations.
Despite the sharp increase in daytime heat, nighttime temperatures have so far remained close to seasonal norms across much of Punjab and Haryana. Ludhiana recorded one of the lowest overnight temperatures at 19°C across the northern plains on Saturday night. Meanwhile, gusty winds have also been reported in several areas, including wind speeds of 43 kilometres per hour in Faridkot, 38 kilometres per hour in Pathankot, 35 kilometres per hour in Amritsar and about 33 kilometres per hour in Seobagh in Himachal Pradesh, offering only limited relief from the rising heat.
