Political battle over ‘terrorist’ controversy, BJP approached the Election Commission, demanded an apology from Kharge
digital desk- A statement given regarding the Prime Minister has created a new storm in the country’s politics. A delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party met the Election Commission on Wednesday and demanded strict action against Mallikarjun Kharge. It is alleged that Kharge in a statement called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘terrorist’, which the BJP has called extremely objectionable and dangerous for democracy. On this issue, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju gave a sharp reaction and said that BJP has reached the Election Commission with a very sad heart. He said that such language is not only an insult to the Prime Minister but is also an insult to the entire country. Rijiju said, “This kind of language has never been used before. If political parties stoop to this level, democracy will be weakened.” He demanded from the Election Commission that strict action should be taken in this matter so that any leader in future avoids making such comments. He also demanded a public apology from Congress.
‘The country has been insulted’ BJP’s attack
Rijiju said in his statement that calling the country’s Prime Minister a ‘terrorist’ is not acceptable under any circumstances. He said that the country is fighting a strong fight against terrorism under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, hence such statements are against political decorum. He also added that the public will respond to this kind of politics. “The public will teach a lesson to Congress, but only the Modi government will do the work of responding to terrorism,” Rijiju said.
Clarification on statement, but controversy continues
The whole controversy started during a press conference held in Chennai, where a controversy arose over Kharge’s statement. However, Kharge later clarified his remarks and said that his statement had been misrepresented. Kharge said, “I want to make it clear that I did not call the Prime Minister a terrorist. I said that he scares and intimidates people through his policies and agencies.” He alleged that his statement had been taken out of context.
Politics heated up, eyes on EC’s decision
This entire matter has once again sparked a debate on political language and decorum. On one hand BJP is making it an issue of national honour, while on the other hand Congress is calling it a misinterpretation of the statement. Now all eyes are on the Election Commission to see what stand it takes on this complaint. Will there be any formal action in this matter or will this controversy remain limited to political rhetoric – it will become clear in the coming days.
