Big gift from Railways! Great news for disabled passengers
New Delhi: Indian Railways has taken an important and relief step for disabled passengers. According to the new notification issued on 20 April 2026, now disabled passengers holding valid UDID (Unique Disability ID) card will be able to easily travel in special reserved coaches of mail and express trains.
UDID card holders will get special facility
Under the new rules of Railways, passengers having valid UDID card issued by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities will now be considered as bonafide passengers. This means that they will be able to travel in their designated reserved coaches without any additional hassles. This facility will also be applicable to those passengers with disabilities who are eligible for the concessional ticket facility offered by the Railways and who possess a valid identity card.
Facilities already available for disabled passengers
Indian Railways has already been providing many concessions and facilities to passengers with disabilities. These include: fare concessions, reserved seats in special coaches, e-ticketing, use of photo identity cards, ancillary facilities during travel. With the new rules these facilities have been made more simple and effective.
Strict action against unauthorized travelers
Railways has also clarified that strict action will be taken against people traveling in disabled coaches without permission. In such cases, the provision of punitive action under the Railway Act 1989 will be applicable. Its objective is to ensure that the benefit of reserved coaches is availed only by genuinely eligible passengers.
A big step for the disabled
This UDID card based system will not only make the identification process easier but will also reduce the hassles during travel. With this, disabled passengers will get a better experience both at the station and in the train.
