The controversy started when donald trump shared the video of Michael Savage, a radical conservative writer and radio host, on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’. In this video, Savage talked about citizenship in America based on birth, which is called ‘Birthright Citizenship’ It is said that he was sharply criticized.
While speaking, Savage used derogatory words like ‘hellhole’ (hell-like place) for countries like India and China. He alleged that foreign citizens take advantage of the loopholes in American laws and come to America in the last months of their pregnancy so that their children can get citizenship there.
US embassy cleaning
As soon as this matter came into limelight, resentment was seen in the Indian community and diplomatic circles present in America. Handling the situation, the US Embassy spokesperson issued an official statement. The spokesperson clarified that Donald Trump considers India a ‘great country’ and he has a very close and good friend in the top leadership of India.
An attempt was made by the Embassy to convey the message that the video shared from Trump’s personal social media handle may be the views of an author but they do not reflect Trump’s actual attitude towards India.
What was India’s stance?
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has responded in a very measured manner on this sensitive issue. When spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was asked about this video during the weekly press briefing, he spoke very briefly.
Jaiswal said, ‘We have seen some such reports and at this time we do not want to say anything more on this.’ This stance of the Indian Government shows that it is in favor of maintaining diplomatic patience and peace instead of being too aggressive on such statements.
Attack on American justice system
In the video, Michael Savage’s target was not limited only to India and China, but he also strongly criticized the American justice system and the ‘American Civil Liberties Union’ (ACLU). Savage argued that under the cover of legal debates, the number of illegal immigrants in America was increasing.
