Medical infrastructure in Delhi will get a new look, Rekha Gupta approves redevelopment of MAMC complex

Taking a major step towards modernizing the health infrastructure of the capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has approved the study for comprehensive redevelopment of the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) campus. This decision is being considered as the beginning of a major change in the medical infrastructure of Delhi. This huge health complex spread over about 137 acres is not limited to only Maulana Azad Medical College, but also includes major institutions like Lok Nayak Hospital, GB Pant Hospital, Guru Nanak Eye Center and Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that it has been planned to develop this entire complex as a modern and integrated medical hub, where better, faster and well-organized health services can be provided to the patients. He said that under this initiative, coordination between various hospitals will be strengthened, so that the treatment process can be more effective and time bound. According to the Chief Minister, the project will include installation of state-of-the-art medical equipment, expansion of digital health system and comprehensive upgradation of infrastructure. Apart from this, keeping in mind the increasing number of patients, bed capacity and emergency services will also be strengthened, so that future health needs can be better met.

need for planned rejuvenation

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that this entire complex functions like a big interconnected medical system, hence there is a need for its well-planned and holistic rejuvenation. He said that keeping this objective in mind, the Delhi Government has approved a consultancy assignment for a comprehensive assessment of the entire complex and preparing a long-term development strategy. According to the Chief Minister, this work will be completed in three phases, in which assessment of the existing structure, planning as per future needs and outline of redevelopment will be prepared in a phased manner.

Detailed master plan ready

According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, a detailed master plan for the entire complex will be prepared in the first phase of this project. He said that in this master plan, complete compliance with the rules of local bodies, norms of Delhi Development Authority and all other applicable statutory provisions will be ensured. The Chief Minister also clarified that the master plan to be prepared will not be limited to the current needs only, but will be made keeping in mind the demand and development of health services for the next 30 years, so that the increasing population and medical needs in the future can be effectively faced.

Structural audit of buildings will be done

The second phase of the project will entail a detailed structural audit and technical assessment of the existing buildings across the campus. Through this process, the current condition of the buildings, their strength and future usefulness will be assessed. Based on this, proposals for modern design, better layout and overall redevelopment will be prepared for the new infrastructure, so that the facilities can become more safe, sustainable and patient friendly.

At the same time, in the third phase, all the necessary documents related to the tender will be prepared to get the project off the ground. Along with this, technical support will be provided in the entire tender process, to ensure that the proposed works are successfully completed within the stipulated time frame and as per the quality standards.

Multi-level parking will be developed

Under this project, special attention will be given to the modernization of hospitals as well as planning and design of educational buildings. Apart from this, multi-storey residential buildings, hostels, nursing facilities and necessary support infrastructure will be developed in the campus, thereby creating a better living and working environment for doctors, students and staff. Fire stations, modern sanitation systems, internal road networks and better connectivity will also be included. Also, facilities like advanced security arrangements, cafeteria, adequate parking area and multi-level parking will be developed to provide a more convenient and streamlined experience to the patients and their families.

DPR will be prepared

Digital ground survey, detailed engineering drawings, technical documents and detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared by the consultant appointed under this project. On the basis of all these processes, the redevelopment work will be carried forward in a scientific and systematic manner. The Chief Minister said that the government aims to develop the Maulana Azad Medical College campus as a modern, well-organized and “Integrated Healthcare and Education Hub” in line with future needs. He clarified that this development will not be limited to just building construction, but will also include providing better facilities to patients, expanding health services and creating a world-class environment for medical education. The Chief Minister further said that the government wants to develop such a model campus which can become an example for other medical institutions in the country and where excellence can be ensured in all three areas of treatment, education and research.
