Successful Installation Of 42 Meter Steel Span On Mumbai Metro Line 6

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a significant engineering feat during the implementation of the approximately 14.5 km long Mumbai Metro Line 6 project. Under this, one of the most complex construction works of the corridor, construction of an important pier in the active railway area over the tracks of Western Railway in Jogeshwari area and installation of the first steel composite span has been successfully completed.

This phase began with the construction of Pier P124, located between the up-through and down-through tracks on one of the busiest suburban railway routes in Mumbai.

The work required precise planning, coordination and adherence to strict safety standards in extremely confined space and high-risk environments. The entire work from foundation to pier cap level was carried out as per railway safety standards and approved guidelines.

Despite continuous train operations on both sides, this work was completed without any disruption. The major challenges of this phase included limited working hours at night, frequently running train services, controlled execution and the need for continuous monitoring and strict adherence to safety standards.

Following the completion of Pier P124, the first steel composite girder span was installed between Piers P123 and P124. The installation was completed within the scheduled railway block of approximately 10 hours, reflecting a high level of planning and execution efficiency.

In this work, coordinated use of hydraulic cranes of 500 ton and 600 ton capacity was made. Due to limited space these cranes were strategically placed between active railway tracks, making the task extremely complex and requiring high precision.

The span was successfully installed at a height of approximately 10-12 metres, ensuring adherence to all required safety standards.

These works were completed within the stipulated railway block period, with meticulous planning and coordination, in full adherence to all safety standards and without any additional impact on railway operations.

This achievement marks a significant success in crossing one of the most challenging railway crossing sections of Metro Line 6. This work was possible with the cooperation and coordination of Western Railways.

Metro Line 6 interchange connectivity includes Metro Line 2A at Adarsh ​​Nagar, Metro Line 7 at JVLR, Metro Line 3 at SEEPZ area, Metro Line 4 at Kanjurmarg (West) and Suburban Railway at Jogeshwari and Kanjurmarg.

Metro Line 6 connecting Vikhroli to Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala) is an important project strengthening east-west connectivity in the city.

After its operationalization, travel time of passengers will be significantly reduced, traffic pressure will be reduced on major routes like JVLR, integrated connectivity with other metro lines and suburban rail network will be provided, safe, reliable and comfortable travel facility will be available, dependence on private vehicles will be reduced, thereby reducing pollution and traffic.

This achievement demonstrates that MMRDA is capable of completing extremely complex infrastructure projects with precision, safety and efficiency even in dense urban conditions.

Highlighting the significance of this achievement, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), said, “Metro Line 6 is a long-awaited important project for Mumbaikars and we are well aware of the public expectations related to it.

This achievement represents significant progress in one of the most challenging parts of the project and reflects our efforts to move the work forward with speed and accuracy.

At this stage, we are actively considering various options to operationalize this corridor in a phased manner, so that passengers can benefit from it as soon as possible. Providing reliable and effective east-west connectivity to the city is our top priority.”
